About Kara
I help people and organizations see where they’re going.
I’m Kara Steffen. I believe organizations exist to serve people by doing meaningful work, and that people do their best work, and live their best lives, when they know their next horizon and are moving toward it.

My story
Where vision meets operational reality.
For nearly a decade, I’ve partnered with organizations across the nonprofit and private sectors, from emerging ventures to established enterprises managing nine-figure budgets, helping them build the clarity, capacity, and infrastructure to realize their ambitions and strengthen their impact.
My experience spans organizational strategy, revenue, technology, data, finance, and implementation. That breadth lets me connect big-picture vision with operational reality, translating leadership priorities into the systems, processes, and decisions that move organizations forward.
I’m particularly drawn to moments of organizational evolution, when what once worked is no longer enough, and new possibilities require new ways of thinking and operating. I believe that with the right alignment of people, purpose, and infrastructure, organizations can move beyond their immediate challenges and toward a more ambitious, sustainable future. I believe we are meant to change the world.
Why the Optimal Horizon
An idea that grew out of the work.
Again and again I’ve watched talented teams with ambitious plans struggle to make progress, not because anyone was failing, but because their people, processes, technology, data and finances had fallen out of step. They needed more than a plan. They needed a shared direction they could actually see, and a path they could take one step at a time.
The Optimal Horizon is my way of describing that direction. Over time I’ve come to see that it applies just as much to each of us as it does to the organizations we build. The same four steps, Assess, Align, Build and Strengthen, help us take inventory of our lives, decide what matters, and keep moving forward.
This site is where I write about it, speak about it, and share the tools I use to help people and teams find their next horizon. Onward.
What I believe
How I approach change.
Take inventory before redesigning.
Honest observation of how things actually work, in an organization or a life, shows where time and energy are being lost.
Solve the real problem, not only the symptom.
A problem may appear in one place while originating somewhere else, in a team or in a life.
Build for adoption.
A plan, a system, or a new habit only succeeds if people can use and sustain it.
Create visibility.
Good decisions, at work and at home, depend on seeing clearly where you stand.
Keep moving forward.
Every horizon reached is a new vantage point. The goal is to stay in motion, more capable than before, and able to keep seeing farther.
The Change Up Group
Where the Optimal Horizon goes to work.
I founded The Change Up Group to help purpose-led businesses, nonprofits, foundations and complex organizations build the operational strength behind meaningful work. It’s where my team and I put the Optimal Horizon into practice, through Organizational Assessments, Optimal Horizon Workshops, and hands-on implementation.
Each horizon reveals a clearer view of the organization and makes the next horizon possible.
The next horizon
Let’s talk.
Whether you’d like me to speak, facilitate a workshop, or simply tell me about your own next horizon, I’d be glad to hear from you.
